Orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr. James Hamada, explains lumbar spinal stenosis (pinched nerves in the lower spine) and a new treatment option called X-Stop. Learn more at: www.x-stopinternational.com

Instead of permanently joining (fusing) vertebrae with metal rods and screws, and therefore restricting movement, the new procedure uses the Anatomic Facet Replacement System (AFRS) device that attaches to each of 2 next vertebrae with a movable joint that mimics the spine’s natural joint. Update: This procedure is no longer available. Please contact the UCLA Spine Center for alternative treatment options at www.spinecenter.ucla.edu or 310-319-3475Video Rating: 4 / 5

How do I find out if I am a right patient for this procedure?

  • BLUGROOV:

I had a laminectomy in 2008 and it is fused and does not allow motion…..this looks like what I need in my spine. I am now feeling the tension and stress right above and below like doc said. How much does this cost. I’m a Type 1 diabetic veteran and 32 years old. The rods that I have in my back….resulting from an 18 wheeler wreck by Sysco Food Corp. I want to try this. I’ll do it if UCLA takes care of me. Please.

I wish this had been available before my fusion. I cannot sleep in a bed. I sleep maybe 45 minutes to an hour before I have to change from the head of my sofa to the foot of my sofa with my back to the back of the sofa with a pillow between my legs crouched in the fetal position. I lose feeling in my legs and I cannot walk when I initially get up from the sofa. I have to try to shuffle with difficulty to get to the bathroom.
